Waimarama is the name given the Lodge by its first owners. The word is
Maori, from the language of the
Tangata Whenua, the indigenous people of the land, and means “Moon Over the Water”. It evokes the moonlight that plays at night over the rippling waters of the magnificent
Tongariro River/Te Awa Tongariro. That moon and the changing colours of the river as it passes outside the Lodge form the central themes of our logo. One of the finest trout fisheries in the world, the river is literally a stone’s throw from the Lodge.
